In the summer of 2022, a promising young life was tragically cut short on the streets of Harlem, New York. Fourteen-year-old Justin Streeter, a Black male, had recently moved with his family to Plainfield, New Jersey, in search of a safer environment, away from the very violence that would ultimately claim him. On the afternoon of July 19th, Justin was back in his old neighborhood to say his goodbyes, visiting grandparents and friends.
He and his 15-year-old best friend had just left a
deli on East 128th Street near Park Avenue when their lives were irrevocably changed. As they walked, a figure approached and opened fire. In the ensuing chaos, Justin was struck in the head. His friend was shot in the leg but managed to survive. Justin was rushed to Harlem Hospital, but his injuries proved fatal. The broad-daylight shooting sent shockwaves through the community, a stark reminder of the persistent specter of gun violence. Investigators at the scene recovered seven shell casings, evidence of the brutal and sudden attack. In the immediate aftermath, there was an outpouring of grief from his family, who had made the difficult decision to leave the city for the sake of their children's safety. His father expressed a profound sense of loss and a desperate plea for justice. Police initially believed the shooting could have been a case of mistaken identity, possibly related to gang activity in the area, though they were clear that neither Justin nor his friend had any gang affiliations.
The investigation into Justin's death moved swiftly. Nearly a week after the shooting, a 17-year-old male named Jiniye Hooks turned himself in to the 25th Precinct, accompanied by a family member. He was subsequently arrested and faced a litany of charges, including murder, attempted murder, assault, and criminal use of a firearm. The case proceeded through the legal system, culminating in a significant development in March 2024. Jiniye Hooks, then 18, pleaded guilty to one count of Murder in the Second Degree and one count of Attempted Murder in the Second Degree. This plea was an admission of his role in the fatal shooting of Justin and the wounding of his friend.
On April 15, 2024, Jiniye Hooks was sentenced for his crimes. A New York State Supreme Court handed down a term of 20 years to life in state prison. The sentencing marked the conclusion of the legal proceedings, bringing a measure of closure to Justin Streeter's grieving family and the community that had been so deeply affected by his senseless death. While the court proceedings have ended, the memory of the vibrant 14-year-old, whose future was so violently stolen, continues to serve as a poignant and tragic symbol of the devastating impact of gun violence.
