In East Harlem, on the evening of April 10, 2020, a young man's life was tragically cut short in a dispute over a woman. Darnell Brown, a 23-year-old Black male from the Bronx, was fatally shot in front of an apartment building on First Avenue. The incident unfolded around 7:46 p.m. when police responded to a 911 call reporting a person shot. Upon their arrival, officers discovered Brown with a gunshot wound to his lower back.
He was rushed to Metropolitan Hospital, but his life could not be saved, and he was pronounced deceased.
The investigation into the shooting quickly pointed to a romantic rivalry. Authorities identified 30-year-old Sterling Stewart as the suspect, revealing him to be the ex-boyfriend of Brown's girlfriend and the father of her child. The conflict between the two men over the same woman escalated to a fatal confrontation that evening. Investigators believe this love triangle was the motive behind the deadly shooting, a violent end to a personal dispute.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, law enforcement was able to locate and apprehend Sterling Stewart. He was taken into custody shortly after the incident, and a firearm was recovered. Stewart, a resident of Manhattan, was subsequently arrested and faced a host of serious charges for his alleged actions. The charges brought against him included murder, assault, criminal use of a firearm, and criminal possession of a weapon, reflecting the grave nature of the crime.
Tragically, the violence connected to Darnell Brown's death did not end with his shooting. The following day, as friends and family gathered for a candlelight vigil to mourn his passing and pay their respects, another burst of gunfire erupted.
