Brandon Vails a 28-year-old Black man, was killed on the evening of March 5, 2020, inside the lobby of his apartment building in Harlem/East Harlem. Just after 6:30 p.m., police responding to a 911 call arrived at 78 East 127th Street near Park Avenue and found him suffering from a gunshot wound to the torso. EMS rushed him to Harlem Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
In the immediate aftermath, detectives worked the scene and began trying to piece together what had happened in the building’s lobby, a place that should have been the last few steps between home and safety. Early reports described no public details about a motive, and police had not released a suspect description at that point, leaving the killing framed as a sudden, close-to-home act of violence with more questions than answers.
About two weeks later, police named a suspect and made an arrest. According to police statements reported at the time, Raynard Stapleton, 41, who lived in the same East 127th Street building, was arrested and charged with murder and criminal weapons possession in connection with the shooting. The reported relationship between the two men was that of neighbors, and the motive was described as unconfirmed. Stapleton appeared in court on March 20, 2020, with further court dates to follow.
Public court records later reflected that the case continued moving through the criminal courts long after the initial headlines faded. An appellate motion order released on May 9, 2024, notes that an appeal was taken from a judgment of the Supreme Court, New York County, rendered on or about May 18, 2023, and granted relief related to prosecuting the appeal and assigning counsel. In a separate motion decision dated August 15, 2024, the Appellate Division denied Stapleton’s request for release or bail pending the appeal.
