In the summer of 2024, a senseless act of violence cut short the life of Jeremiah Cummings, a 37-year-old man in Harlem, New York. On the afternoon of July 2nd, Cummings was with a group of men on West 118th Street and 8th Avenue when a car drove by. The driver, identified as 21-year-old Mohamed Sawaneh, allegedly rolled down the passenger-side window and opened fire on the group.

Despite his grievous injury, he managed to drag himself behind a parked vehicle before collapsing. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but was pronounced dead upon arrival. The other men who were with Cummings at the time of the shooting managed to escape unharmed.
Immediately following the shooting, Sawaneh fled the scene in his vehicle. His attempt to escape was reckless, and he soon crashed into another car that was stopped at a light near West 118th Street and St. Nicholas Avenue. The collision resulted in an injury to the 61-year-old driver of the other vehicle. Undeterred, Sawaneh abandoned his damaged car and continued his escape on foot. A short time later, he brandished a firearm and robbed a 13-year-old boy of his Citi Bike near West 118th Street and Lenox Avenue, using the stolen bicycle to continue his flight.
Law enforcement officials launched an investigation into the brazen daylight murder. Their efforts led them to identify Mohamed Sawaneh as the prime suspect. It was discovered that in the minutes leading up to the fatal shooting, Sawaneh had taken photographs of the group of men that included Jeremiah Cummings. After managing to evade capture for over a month, Sawaneh's run from the law came to an end. He had fled to Ohio but was apprehended by police on August 13, 2024, upon his return to a bus terminal in Chinatown. Following his arrest, Mohamed Sawaneh was indicted on charges of murder and criminal possession of a weapon for his alleged role in the death of Jeremiah Cummings.
