In the early hours of an April morning in East Harlem, a domestic dispute escalated into a tragedy that claimed the life of 19-year-old Ramon Alvarez. The young man, who was an expectant father, was shot and killed inside an apartment at the NYCHA's Jefferson Houses on East 112th Street. The incident unfolded at approximately 3:00 a.m. on April 10, 2024, when Jose Rodriguez, 54, arrived at the residence of his ex-girlfriend, who was Alvarez's aunt.
An argument erupted between Rodriguez
and his former partner, prompting her to demand that he leave the apartment. Hearing the commotion from another room, Ramon Alvarez emerged to intervene in the escalating dispute. At that point, Rodriguez allegedly pulled out a firearm and shot Alvarez in the abdomen. He then reportedly fired at his ex-girlfriend, grazing her shoulder, before fleeing the scene. When police and emergency services arrived, they found Alvarez conscious and alert despite his serious injury. He was rushed to Harlem Hospital and underwent emergency surgery, but tragically succumbed to his injuries later that day.
The day after the fatal shooting, law enforcement located and arrested Jose Rodriguez in the Bronx. During the arrest, Rodriguez attempted to flee from the officers and discarded a firearm. He was subsequently indicted in May 2024 on a slew of charges, including second-degree murder, attempted murder, burglary, and criminal possession of a weapon. At the time of the incident, Rodriguez was reportedly homeless. The case against him is being pursued by the Manhattan District Attorney's Office.
