Javier Osorio-Mejia, a 31-year-old man, was a well-known sneaker reseller who had built a reputation through hard work and sleepless nights. Known affectionately as Upscale Cracc, he was also a devoted father to his young daughter. His life, however, was cut short in the early morning hours of June 25, 2024, in the upscale SoHo neighborhood of New York City.
In what appears to have been a meticulously planned and violent robbery, Osorio-Mejia was ambushed after leaving a nightclub in
Queens. Two men, later identified as Jayquan Straker, 35, and Marc Haygood, 28, allegedly followed him from the club into Manhattan. At approximately 5:10 a.m., after Osorio-Mejia parked his vehicle on Greene Street, the two men pulled up beside him. Straker is accused of getting out of the passenger seat and immediately opening fire, shooting Osorio-Mejia twice in the head and once in the leg. As he lay dying, the assailants allegedly stole jewelry from his body, including a Rolex watch, before fleeing in a black SUV. Emergency services rushed Osorio-Mejia to Bellevue Hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries. Left behind at the scene were his brand new Range Rover, cash, and a pair of his trademark lime green Nike sneakers.
Following a two-month investigation, police arrested Jayquan Straker on August 22, 2024. His alleged accomplice, Marc Haygood, was also taken into custody. In September 2024, the Manhattan District Attorney's Office announced the indictment of both men on multiple charges. Straker faces charges of murder in the first and second degree, robbery in the first and second degree, and criminal possession of a weapon. Haygood is charged with murder in the second degree, robbery in the first and second degree, and criminal possession of a weapon. At their arraignment, where Osorio-Mejia's loved ones were present, both men were ordered to be held without bail.
