In the bright afternoon of April 11, 2023, a sudden act of violence shattered the day in Harlem. Hector Delgado, a 26-year-old Hispanic male, was standing near the corner of East 123rd Street and Lexington Avenue shortly before 4:30 p.m. when he was fatally shot. Authorities arrived to a grim scene, finding Delgado with a gunshot wound to his head. He was rushed to Harlem Hospital, but his life could not be saved.
Delgado, a resident of 129th Street, lived less than a mile from where his life was tragically cut short.
The investigation into Delgado's death quickly pointed to a retaliatory motive. His killing was believed to be a response to the fatal shooting of 19-year-old Jaylen Duncan just three days earlier. Investigators determined that Delgado was associated with a crew known as 'One-Two-Nine,' or 'OTN,' and that his murder was allegedly planned and carried out by associates of Duncan who were seeking revenge.
Within weeks, arrests were made in connection with the brazen daylight shooting. On May 2, 2023, police took two East Harlem residents into custody. Trevor Gibbs, then 23, was charged with murder and criminal possession of a weapon. His alleged accomplice, 19-year-old Kimora Wright, was charged with hindering prosecution. Authorities asserted that Gibbs was the one who approached Delgado and shot him from point-blank range.
The legal process unfolded, culminating in the conviction of Trevor Gibbs. In October 2024, a jury found the now 25-year-old Gibbs guilty of second-degree murder, conspiracy, and criminal possession of a weapon. Several of his associates also faced charges and were convicted for their roles in the violent conspiracy that led to Hector Delgado's death. Kimora Wright later pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter and conspiracy. The convictions brought a measure of justice for a life taken in a cycle of street violence.
