On a November evening in 2022, the life of 42-year-old Rasithamar Grant was cut short in a burst of gunfire in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan. The shooting, which occurred on November 12th outside an event venue on West 25th Street, also left two other individuals wounded. When police officers from the 10th Precinct arrived at the scene around 10:19 p.m., they discovered Grant with multiple gunshot wounds.
He was urgently transported to Bellevue Hospital, but his injuries proved fatal, and he was pronounced dead.
The two other victims of the shooting, a 32-year-old woman and a 37-year-old man, sustained gunshot wounds to their legs but were reported to be in stable condition at area hospitals. The incident shattered the late-night calm of the area near the High Line, with residents reporting hearing five or six loud gunshots in quick succession. The motive for the shooting was not immediately clear in the initial stages of the investigation.
In the months that followed, investigators made a series of arrests in connection with Grant's death. In December 2022, brothers Lmani Delima, 30, and Lashawn Delima, 32, were taken into custody and charged with murder. The investigation continued, leading to the arrests of two more suspects, 57-year-old Gary Delima and 38-year-old Tyson Williams, in February of the following year. They also faced murder charges. The fifth and final suspect, 26-year-old Quashawn Gibbs of New Jersey, was arrested in April 2023 and was also charged with murder, bringing a close to the manhunt for those believed to be responsible for the fatal shooting.
