James G. Carragher, a 55-year-old police officer with the New York City Housing Authority Police Department, tragically lost his life on February 11, 1982. Officer Carragher was returning home from his tour of duty when he was approached by two armed men about eighty feet from his building. The men attempted to rob him, but Officer Carragher, a World War II Navy veteran, drew his weapon and managed to fire five shots before being shot twice and killed.
