On a Sunday evening in East Harlem, the life of 25-year-old Harry Mendoza was tragically cut short. The Hispanic male from Washington Heights was at the corner of East 128th Street and Lexington Avenue on March 24, 2024, when gunfire erupted at approximately 7:27 p.m. Responding to a 911 call, police discovered Mendoza and 18-year-old Ashley Ballard with gunshot wounds to their heads.
Both victims were rushed to Harlem Hospital, where Ballard was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
Mendoza fought for his life for a couple more hours before succumbing to his injuries just before 10 p.m. In the immediate aftermath, the motive for the shooting was unknown, and police had not made any arrests. Investigators cordoned off the block, where a large bloodstain marked the sidewalk, and used drones to survey the scene for evidence.
For months, the case remained under investigation with no publicly identified suspects. However, a significant breakthrough came with the indictment of nine members of a criminal enterprise known as "Fast Life." According to the Manhattan District Attorney's Office, Mendoza's death was the result of a planned retaliatory shooting against a rival group called "LA World.". Authorities alleged that high-ranking members of "Fast Life" ordered the hit, and a lower-level member, who has been separately charged, carried out the murders of Mendoza and Ballard. This development provided a clearer picture of the circumstances surrounding the violent end to Harry Mendoza's life, linking it to alleged gang-related activity.
