On the night of the Super Bowl in 2015, a violent encounter in Harlem cut short the life of 28-year-old Shadale Graham. The male victim had been enjoying the game at a bar on Broadway and West 137th Street with friends. After the game concluded, Graham and his companions, two male and two female, made their way to a nearby take-out restaurant. It was outside this eatery that their night took a tragic turn.
Two men, who had reportedly been stalking Graham for hours, approached the group
and opened fire. At least ten shots were fired in the assault, which authorities later described as a possible gang-related vendetta. Graham was fatally struck in the head and was pronounced dead at the scene. The four individuals with him also sustained gunshot wounds but survived the attack. The shooters fled the area in a cab immediately following the incident.
The investigation into the shooting led to the arrests of Chavarr Gilliam and Carl Moore. In October 2017, both men, then 26 years old, were convicted of murder, attempted murder, assault, and criminal weapons possession. Their deliberate actions, which included waiting for Graham outside the bar and following him to the restaurant, pointed to a premeditated attack. In December 2017, Gilliam and Moore were each sentenced to 25 years to life in state prison for their roles in the death of Shadale Graham and the injuries to his four friends, leaving behind Graham's young son.
