In the East Village of New York, a brazen daylight shooting on Thursday, September 1, 2022, claimed the life of 26-year-old Dillin Tolentino. The male victim had just exited an apartment building near Avenue C and East 12th Street around 1:30 p.m. when the fatal encounter unfolded. An attacker, reportedly riding a Citi Bike, approached Tolentino and shot him in the head.
The incident occurred in a busy area, directly across from an elementary school and a playground.
Following the initial shot, the gunman was seen pacing back and forth next to Tolentino's fallen body before kicking him multiple times in the head. The assailant then abandoned the bicycle at the scene and fled on foot. Emergency medical services arrived to find Tolentino unconscious and unresponsive. He was quickly transported to Bellevue Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The shocking and public nature of the attack left the community stunned.
The investigation into the murder led police to a suspect who lived less than two blocks from the victim. On Wednesday, September 14, 2022, the New York Police Department arrested 21-year-old Tyler Hall-Canale at the 9th Precinct. He was subsequently charged with murder and two counts of criminal possession of a weapon in connection with Dillin Tolentino's death. Reports at the time of the incident suggested the victim was a member of a local gang and had been paroled the previous year after a conviction for attempted murder.
