In the early morning hours of February 13, 2016, a burst of gunfire shattered the atmosphere inside Harlem Nights Bar, leading to the tragic death of 22-year-old Jarel Mitchell. A resident of the Bronx, Mitchell was inside the establishment on Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Boulevard when the incident occurred shortly after 3 a.m. He sustained two gunshot wounds to his back and was rushed to Harlem Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
A second individual, a 24-year-old man, was also shot in the leg but was reported to be in stable condition.
According to the owner of the bar, the shooting appeared to be a targeted attack. There was reportedly no argument or altercation before the gunman approached Mitchell and opened fire at point-blank range before fleeing the scene. Detectives at the time were investigating the possibility that the shooting was in retaliation for a previous incident.
In the wake of the shooting, community advocates and the bar owner called for peace to prevent any further violence. Despite the ongoing investigation by the New York Police Department, no arrests have been made in connection with the murder of Jarel Mitchell.
