On a spring evening in the Bronx, what began as a dispute over a teenage romance tragically escalated into a violent act that claimed the life of 15-year-old Carlos Young. On April 28, 1990, Young, along with his friend Nelson Rivera, also 15, and two other youths, were lured to a schoolyard with the promise of drugs. This promise, however, was a deceptive ploy born from a festering grudge.
The events of that night were set in motion when a teenager, angered by perceived insults directed
at his girlfriend, sought a vengeful confrontation. In the confines of the schoolyard, the atmosphere of youthful camaraderie was shattered. The vengeful teen, armed with a gun, forced Young and the others to their knees before opening fire. The sudden eruption of violence left both Carlos Young and Nelson Rivera dead at the scene, their lives cut short in a senseless act of retribution. Two other teenagers were wounded in the attack but survived.
The day following the deadly shooting, the alleged gunman, whose name was not publicly released at the time due to his age, surrendered to police detectives. He was subsequently charged with two counts of murder and two counts of attempted murder. The community was left to grapple with the shocking loss of two of its young members, their deaths serving as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of youth violence.
