James A. Johnson, a 38-year-old Black man, was found dead on December 11, 2018, in a room at the Richmond Hotel in the St. George neighborhood of Staten Island, New York. An initial examination revealed trauma to his head, and a subsequent autopsy confirmed the cause of death was a gunshot wound to the head. The discovery of his body launched a homicide investigation that would quickly focus on two fellow residents of the hotel.
