James A. Johnson, a 38-year-old Black man, was found dead on December 11, 2018, in a room at the Richmond Hotel in the St. George neighborhood of Staten Island, New York. An initial examination revealed trauma to his head, and a subsequent autopsy confirmed the cause of death was a gunshot wound to the head. The discovery of his body launched a homicide investigation that would quickly focus on two fellow residents of the hotel.
The authorities identified Jonathan Julio, 37, and Krystal
Isolda, 36, as suspects in Johnson's death. The investigation determined that the motive for the killing was a drug dispute that had escalated to violence. Not long after the investigation began, the NYPD's Regional Fugitive Task Force located and apprehended Julio and Isolda on Forest Avenue, about seven miles from the hotel where Johnson's body was found.
Following their arrests, Jonathan Julio was charged with murder and weapons possession. Krystal Isolda was charged with weapons possession and hindering prosecution. During their arraignment in Richmond County Criminal Court, it was revealed that Isolda had initially told investigators that she was the one who pulled the trigger, but later changed her statement to implicate Julio. Julio faced a potential sentence of 25 years to life in prison for the murder charge. The case highlighted the ongoing issues of drug-related violence in the community.
