Luis Dela Cruz, a Hispanic male, was with his twin brother and a group of friends in the Inwood neighborhood of Manhattan on November 14th when the fatal encounter occurred. Around 9 p.m., near Thayer Street and Sherman Avenue, an assailant approached the group from behind and opened fire. Dela Cruz was struck in the legs by the gunfire.
The bullet severed a major artery, leading to significant blood loss. He was rushed to NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, but medical efforts were in vain, and he succumbed to his injuries.
Family and friends were left to mourn a young man they described as protective and loving, who worked as a lifeguard while passionately pursuing a future in music. They insisted he had no involvement in gang activities and possessed a clean criminal record, making his death all the more senseless to them. The neighborhood where the shooting happened was known for issues related to the illegal drug trade, but those close to Dela Cruz maintained he was focused on a positive path. His twin brother, Andri, who was present during the attack, recounted how the shots rang out from behind them as they walked up the street.
The New York Police Department launched an investigation that quickly led to a suspect. Less than a week after the shooting, on November 20, 2019, authorities arrested Jonathan Rodriguez. The 29-year-old, who lived only a block from the crime scene, was a parolee with a prior conviction for attempted weapon possession. At the time of his arrest, Rodriguez was allegedly found with a substantial quantity of drugs, including marijuana and other narcotics, which resulted in additional felony drug charges.
Jonathan Rodriguez was subsequently charged with the murder of Luis Dela Cruz, as well as weapons and drug possession. He was arraigned in Manhattan Criminal Court and held without bail. While an arrest was made, the motive for the shooting remained unclear to investigators, with possibilities ranging from Luis being the intended target to a tragic case of mistaken identity.
