Early Life and Criminal Beginnings

Thomas Wayne Crump was born in 1940 in Muncie, Indiana. His early years were marked by criminal activities, including car thefts and attempted murder. In 1958, he faced charges for attempting to kill a woman who had a dispute with his mother. The following year, he was accused of stealing four cars within 48 hours. Despite these offenses, Crump managed to avoid significant prison time during his early criminal career.

Escalation to Violence

Crump's criminal behavior escalated over the years. In 1960, he attempted to rob a man in a hotel bathroom but pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of larceny. By 1962, he and accomplices lured a man from a bar, robbed him, and were subsequently arrested. Crump received a prison sentence of 1 to 5 years for this crime. After his release, he continued his criminal activities, including a robbery in 1966 and an attempted murder in Michigan in 1967, where he stabbed a waitress ten times after a dispute.

• Irving Plaisted - October 8, 1980 - Albuquerque, New Mexico: A 78-year-old man from Minnesota, whom Crump robbed and fatally shot after being offered a ride.
• Ian Smith - June 17, 1982 - Albuquerque, New Mexico: A 44-year-old taxi driver, whom Crump shot and killed after escaping from prison.
