Nathaniel Robert Jr. Code: The Cedar Grove Killer

Early Life

Nathaniel Robert Code Jr., born on March 12, 1956, in Shreveport, Louisiana, had a troubled upbringing. Raised by his great-aunt and grandfather after his parents' divorce, Code exhibited disturbing behaviors from a young age, including alleged acts of animal cruelty. He dropped out of high school after failing the ninth grade and had a history of violent incidents, including being shot by his uncle during an argument in 1971. In 1975, Code was convicted of attempted aggravated rape and sentenced to 15 years in prison; he was released on good behavior in January 1984.

Confirmed Victims

• Debra Ann Ford (25) – August 31, 1984, Shreveport, Louisiana: Ford was found in her home with her hands bound and multiple stab wounds. Her throat had been slit, and she was left face-down on her sofa. The crime scene showed signs of a struggle, but there was minimal evidence to identify the perpetrator at the time.
• Vivian Chaney (34), Billy Joe Harris (28), Carlitha Culbert (15), and Jerry Culbert (25) – July 19, 1985, Cedar Grove neighborhood, Shreveport, Louisiana: In a brutal mass murder, Code killed four individuals in a single incident. Harris was shot multiple times and had his throat slashed; his hands and ankles were bound. Jerry Culbert was shot once in the head while sleeping. Carlitha Culbert was found with her hands bound, gagged, and her throat deeply cut. Vivian Chaney was discovered slumped over a bathtub, bound, beaten, and strangled, with evidence suggesting she was drowned after witnessing her daughter's murder. Two young girls, aged 7 and 10, present in the home at the time, survived the attack.
• William Code (73) – August 5, 1987, Shreveport, Louisiana: Nathaniel Code's grandfather was found in his home, beaten and stabbed 13 times. He was also bound and gagged. The brutality of the attack led investigators to suspect someone close to William was responsible.
• Joe Robinson Jr. (12) and Eric Williams (8) – August 5, 1987, Shreveport, Louisiana: Both boys were present in William Code's home during the attack. They were found bound, gagged, and strangled to death with a cord.

Investigation and Arrest

The investigation into these murders was challenging due to the lack of direct evidence initially linking Code to the crimes.
