Thomas David Carr: A Notorious Serial Killer
Early Life and Background
Thomas David Carr was born on March 6, 1846, in Sugar Hill, Virginia. He was the fourth son in a family of five boys and three girls. His father, William Carr, was abusive, and the family frequently moved around West Virginia. Carr grew up as a troublesome child and was sent to prison at a young age.
Military Service and War Crimes
At the age of 16, Carr enlisted in the 16th Ohio Infantry and later served in the 18th Ohio Infantry. During his military career, he was frequently arrested for misconduct and twice sentenced to be shot for violating regulations. President Abraham Lincoln pardoned him on one occasion. Carr confessed to his first murder near Virginia's Greenleaf Mountain, where he shot a citizen who tried to arrest him.
Criminal Activities and Murders
After his military service, Carr continued his criminal activities. He confessed to murdering 14 men across various states, including Virginia, South Carolina, Mississippi, Tennessee, North Carolina, Maryland, and West Virginia. His most notorious crime was the murder of his 13-year-old fiancée, Louisa Fox, in Kirkwood Township, Belmont County, Ohio.
