John Francis Wille: A Multistate Trail of Murder

Overview

John Francis Wille was a Louisiana-born drifter whose name became associated with a series of violent deaths across Louisiana, Florida and Alabama between 1980 and 1985. Investigators portrayed him as a mobile and unpredictable offender who selected vulnerable people, acquaintances and strangers encountered while traveling. The crimes attributed to him involved arson, beating, stabbing, strangulation, sexual violence, mutilation and the deliberate use of a vehicle as a weapon. Wille was born on February 14, 1964, and grew up in the LaPlace area of Louisiana. He was only sixteen years old when authorities later alleged that he committed his first murder. By the summer of 1985, he was twenty-one and traveling through the Gulf Coast region with his girlfriend, Judith Walters, and her teenage daughter. What initially appeared to be a collection of unrelated deaths in different jurisdictions began to look like a connected series after Walters spoke with law enforcement officers in Florida. Wille reportedly confessed to several killings while being questioned, although he later withdrew or disputed portions of those statements. He was ultimately convicted in separate proceedings connected to the deaths of Frank Powe and eight-year-old Nichole Michelle Lopatta. Other deaths were attributed to him through confessions, witness statements or investigative findings, but the strength and legal status of the evidence differed from case to case.

Known and Attributed Victims

• Ida Bodreaux, 78 July 1980 LaPlace, Louisiana: Bodreaux, whose surname has also appeared in records as Boudreaux, died after her home was deliberately set on fire. Wille was later linked to the fatal arson and reportedly described setting the residence ablaze. Available accounts differ on whether the fire occurred on July 12 or July 16, 1980, so a precise date of death cannot be stated with certainty.
• Nichole Michelle Lopatta, 8 June 2, 1985 St. John the Baptist Parish, Louisiana: Nichole disappeared from the Tres Vidas apartment complex in Terrytown on June 2. Prosecutors said she was taken north toward LaPlace, sexually assaulted and strangled in an isolated area near Frenier Road. Her body was discovered on June 6, 1985, in woods approximately eight miles north of LaPlace.
• Billy Phillips, approximately 25 June 2, 1985 Manchac area, Louisiana: Phillips was a hitchhiker and acquaintance who was traveling with Wille on the day Nichole disappeared. His body was recovered on June 6 beneath Interstate 55, about two miles from Nichole's remains. He had suffered extensive violence, including multiple stab wounds and mutilation. Later legal challenges asserted that forensic evidence showed Phillips drowned, creating disputes about the exact sequence of events surrounding his death.
• Michael H. Foulk, 19 June or July 1985 near Fairhope, Alabama: Foulk was a taxi driver from the Pensacola, Florida, area. He disappeared after accepting a fare and was later found dead in a roadside ditch outside Fairhope, Alabama. Wille was linked to the killing during the expanding multistate investigation. Publicly available accounts do not establish a consistently verified date of death, although the case occurred during the summer of 1985.
• Frank Powe, 26 July 15, 1985 near Bagdad, Florida: Powe was hitchhiking when he encountered Wille and the women traveling with him. According to the prosecution's evidence, Wille became angry after Powe made remarks toward Walters. Powe was beaten unconscious, placed in the rear of a vehicle and later deliberately run over. Wille pleaded guilty to Powe's murder and received a life sentence with no possibility of parole for twenty-five years.
