On July 15, 1985, 26-year-old white male Frank Powe from Bagdad, Florida, was tragically killed in a violent incident that later revealed the presence of a serial killer operating across multiple states. Powe had been hitchhiking near Bagdad when he was approached by John Francis Wille, a 21-year-old drifter from LaPlace, Louisiana. According to testimony from Wille’s girlfriend, the encounter turned fatal after Powe allegedly made flirtatious remarks toward her, which enraged Wille.
Wille responded by beating the 26-year-old white male victim unconscious and placing him in the bed of his pickup truck. He then drove several miles before stopping again, dumping Powe onto the pavement, and deliberately running over him with the vehicle. This brutal act resulted in Powe’s death and was initially treated as a hit-and-run. However, the circumstances quickly escalated into a broader investigation when Wille’s girlfriend began cooperating with authorities.
Later that same day, Wille was involved in a separate incident in Milton, Florida, where he set fire to a mobile home belonging to his landlord, killing several pet dogs in the blaze. This act of arson led to his arrest and opened the door to a series of confessions and connections to other crimes. Wille’s girlfriend disclosed a disturbing pattern of violence, linking him to multiple murders across Louisiana, Florida, Texas, and Alabama.
