Introduction
Edward Arthur Surratt, born on August 8, 1941, in Aliquippa, Pennsylvania, is an American murderer, rapist, and suspected serial killer. He was convicted of a single murder and several rapes in 1978, and remains the prime suspect in a series of murders in Pennsylvania, Ohio, and South Carolina between 1977 and 1978. In 2007, after serving 29 years in prison, Surratt confessed to six murders, but no charges were brought against him. In 2021, he confessed to six more murders.
Crimes and Victims
- William and Nancy Adams: Fallston, Pennsylvania, 1977. William Adams, 31, died of a shotgun blast to the chest at home while his wife, Nancy, 29, was kidnapped and killed. William's body was discovered by their 7-year-old child.
- John Shelkons: Baden, Pennsylvania, January 7, 1978. John Shelkons, 56, was brutally attacked and killed in his home. His wife, Catherine, was badly beaten but survived.
- Joel Krueger: Bedford County, Pennsylvania, December 31, 1977. Joel Krueger, 36, was found dead in a parked car along Interstate 70, about 3 miles from the Mills' home.
- Guy and Laura Mills: Fulton County, Pennsylvania, December 31, 1977. Guy and Laura Mills, both 65, were discovered dead in their ransacked Breezewood home.
Confessions and Imprisonment
Edward Surratt was first arrested on July 1, 1978, and has remained in prison since. He is currently serving two life sentences for violent crimes committed in Florida and was convicted of murder in South Carolina. In 2021, Surratt confessed to six more murders, leading to resolutions in four unsolved homicide cases in Pennsylvania. Despite his confessions, county prosecutors do not plan to charge Surratt for these crimes given his life sentences in other jurisdictions.
