On December 31, 1977, Laura Mills, a 65-year-old white female from Fulton County, Pennsylvania, was murdered alongside her husband, Guy Mills, also 65 years old. The couple was found dead in their ransacked home in Breezewood, Bedford County, early on the morning of January 1, 1978. Both victims had been shot, and the scene suggested a violent home invasion and robbery. The brutality of the crime shocked the local community and left investigators with few immediate leads.
For decades, the case remained unsolved, haunting law enforcement and the Mills family. However, in 2021, a major development emerged when Edward A. Surratt, a convicted serial killer and former long-haul truck driver, confessed to the murders of Guy and Laura Mills. At the time of his confession, Surratt was serving two life sentences in Florida for unrelated crimes, including sexual battery and burglary. He had also been convicted of murder in South Carolina.
Surratt, a white male and Vietnam War veteran originally from Aliquippa, Pennsylvania, admitted to killing six people in Pennsylvania during a spree in the late 1970s. His confession included the slayings of the Mills couple in Fulton County and another victim, Joel Krueger, found shot to death in a parked car just three miles from the Mills' home on the same night. All three victims were killed with a shotgun.
Despite the confession, prosecutors in Fulton, Bedford, and Beaver counties chose not to pursue charges against Surratt due to his existing life sentences. Authorities stated that the decision was made in part to spare the victims' families the trauma of a trial and because Surratt would never be released from prison. His confession brought long-awaited closure to several cold cases, including that of Laura Mills, the 65-year-old white female whose life was taken in a senseless act of violence more than four decades earlier.
