On a tragic night in South Franklin Township, 18-year-old Annalaya Wilkerson was found shot and killed, her life cut short on the side of Jolly School Road on April 13, 2024. Residents in the rural area reported hearing gunshots around 11 p.m. and discovered Wilkerson, who was pronounced dead at the scene from a gunshot wound to the chest, along with her 17-year-old friend who was also shot but survived.
The surviving teenager was flown to a Pittsburgh hospital in critical condition and underwent numerous surgeries.
The investigation into the death of the Monongahela teen, described as a beautiful, funny, and spirited young woman, led to the identification of four suspects. The female victim, Chelsie Estock, later testified that on the night of the incident, she and Wilkerson had arranged to meet Anthony Barfield. Instead, his brother, Windale 'Winnie' Barfield Jr., 19, and Karon Whitlock, 20, picked them up from a Red Roof Inn. Estock recounted that they drove to the remote Jolly School Road where Windale Barfield is accused of opening fire on both girls as they got out of the car. Investigators believe the shooting was carried out at the direction of Anthony Barfield, who was 17 at the time but charged as an adult.
Following the shooting, an intensive investigation utilizing cell phone data led to charges against the Barfield brothers and Whitlock. The charges included criminal homicide, conspiracy, and attempted homicide. A fourth individual, 25-year-old Jeheili Cochran, who is Karon Whitlock's sister, was later charged with hindering apprehension and tampering with evidence. Authorities alleged that Cochran helped Whitlock flee to New York, where Windale Barfield had also gone, and disposed of the murder weapon, which has not been recovered. Windale Barfield Jr. and Karon Whitlock eventually turned themselves in to the police.
In January 2026, a major development occurred in the case when three of the four individuals charged accepted plea deals. Windale Barfield Jr. was sentenced to serve 22 to 44 years in state prison. His brother, Anthony Barfield, received a sentence of 15 to 30 years. Jeheili Cochran pleaded guilty to tampering with evidence. The fourth suspect, Karon Whitlock, did not take a plea deal; his case is being handled separately, with the district attorney noting his cooperation with the investigation. Wilkerson's mother expressed her grief and frustration with the plea deals, stating that the sentences were not enough for the life that was taken and that many questions about why her daughter was killed remain unanswered.
