On a spring afternoon in Washington, Pennsylvania, 58-year-old Kristin A. Barfield was enjoying the day on a Ridge Avenue front porch when her life was abruptly cut short. On Wednesday, May 11, 2022, emergency responders were dispatched to the residence shortly after 5 p.m. following reports of a shooting. They discovered Barfield with a gunshot wound to the chest. She was quickly transported to Washington Hospital, but tragically, she was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the senseless killing revealed a case of mistaken identity and a targeted act of violence that claimed an unintended victim. Authorities determined that the actual target of the shooting was Barfield's son, Trey Willis. Three individuals were ultimately identified and charged in connection with the drive-by shooting. The suspects were 30-year-old Brandon Allen, 17-year-old Juan Worthey III, and 15-year-old Tyriq Moss. Both Worthey and Moss were charged as adults.
According to court testimony, the series of events leading to Barfield's death began when Allen picked up Moss and Worthey. Shortly after, someone in the vehicle spotted Barfield's son, and shots were fired from the moving car. One of those bullets struck and killed the beloved grandmother.
The legal process brought a measure of justice for Kristin Barfield's grieving family. Tyriq Moss, the youngest of the accused, entered into a plea agreement with prosecutors, agreeing to testify against his co-defendants in exchange for having his charges dropped. In January 2025, Brandon Allen, identified as the driver, went to trial. He was found not guilty of homicide but was convicted of criminal attempted homicide and conspiracy to commit homicide. Later, in May 2025, on the day his trial was set to begin, Juan Worthey pleaded guilty to third-degree murder and faced a potential sentence of up to 40 years in prison.
