Background

Michele Kalina, born in 1966, was a resident of Reading, Pennsylvania. She worked as a home-health aide and was married to Jeffrey Kalina. The couple had two children: a daughter named Elizabeth, born in 1991, and a son, Andrew, who was born in 1987 with cerebral palsy and severe developmental delays. Andrew passed away in 2000 at the age of 13. Despite being married, Michele engaged in a long-term affair with a coworker, which led to multiple secret pregnancies.

Discovery of the Crimes

In July 2010, Michele's daughter, Elizabeth, then 19 years old, decided to clean a rarely accessed closet in their apartment. Inside, she discovered several suspicious containers, including a cooler and a tub encased in cement. Upon investigation, authorities found the skeletal remains of five infants. These remains had been hidden in the closet for years, unbeknownst to Michele's husband and daughter.

Details of the Crimes

Between 1996 and 2010, Michele secretly gave birth to five babies in her bathtub. She concealed these pregnancies from both her husband and her lover. After each birth, she wrapped the newborns in towels and stored their bodies in containers, which she then hid in a locked closet.
