David Richard Berkowitz, born Richard David Falco on June 1, 1953, in Brooklyn, New York, is infamously known as the "Son of Sam." Between 1976 and 1977, Berkowitz terrorized New York City with a series of shootings that left six people dead and seven others wounded. His crimes plunged the city into panic and led to one of the largest manhunts in New York's history.
Early Life
Berkowitz was adopted by Nathan and Pearl Berkowitz shortly after his birth. He had a troubled childhood, exhibiting violent behavior and a fascination with pyromania. After serving in the U.S. Army from 1971 to 1974, he returned to New York, where his mental state continued to deteriorate, leading up to his infamous crime spree.
The Crime Spree
Between July 1976 and July 1977, Berkowitz carried out a series of shootings, primarily targeting young women and couples in parked cars. He used a .44 caliber Bulldog revolver, earning him the nickname "The .44 Caliber Killer" before he coined himself the "Son of Sam" in letters to the police and press.
