Danny Arthur Ranes: The Kalamazoo Serial Killer
Background
Danny Arthur Ranes was an American serial killer and sexual predator who murdered four women in and around Kalamazoo, Michigan, during 1972. Born on October 20, 1943, in Kalamazoo, Ranes grew up in a troubled household marked by harsh discipline, alcohol abuse and instability. His younger brother, Larry Lee Ranes, independently became a murderer during the 1960s, making the family an unusual example of two brothers who committed separate series of killings without operating together.
Danny Ranes demonstrated violent and sexually predatory behavior years before his known murders. On November 26, 1968, he abducted 18-year-old Dorothy King in Battle Creek after confronting her at gunpoint and taking control of her automobile. Ranes intended to drive King to an isolated location and sexually assault her. She escaped near Kellogg Community College after he took a wrong turn. Investigators found Ranes's automobile near the pharmacy where King worked, and she subsequently identified him as her attacker.
Ranes was convicted of felonious assault on February 4, 1969, and sentenced on April 15 to serve three to four years in prison. He was paroled on February 17, 1972. Within approximately one month of his release, the first murder attributed to him occurred.
Association with Brent Koster
After returning to Kalamazoo, Ranes obtained work at a service station near Interstate 94. During this period, he befriended Brent Eugene Koster, a vulnerable 15-year-old boy from a troubled home. Ranes was nearly thirteen years older and assumed a position of influence over the teenager. He provided Koster with a place to stay in a trailer belonging to one of Ranes's girlfriends and helped him obtain work.
Koster eventually became Ranes's accomplice in the murders of Linda Clark, Claudia Bidstrup and Pamela Fearnow. The crimes involved abduction, sexual assault, strangulation and attempts to conceal the victims' bodies. Although Koster actively participated, testimony and later accounts portrayed Ranes as the dominant figure who planned the attacks and encouraged the teenager's involvement.
