Early Life and Initial Criminal Offenses
Hugh Bion Morse was born on January 9, 1930, in Kansas City, Missouri. Over the course of his adult life, Morse worked in a variety of transient occupations across the United States, including roles as a truck driver, hotel clerk, car wash attendant, taxi driver, farm worker, bellboy, dishwasher, dry cleaner, and telephone installer. His criminal activity initially began with property crimes before escalating into severe violent offenses. During the early 1950s in California, Morse engaged in a series of burglaries in Los Angeles, which resulted in a conviction, a six-month jail sentence, and three years of probation.
Morse's criminal trajectory took a darker turn into sexual assault. In 1955, while residing in Fairfield, California, he lured two eight-year-old girls into an alleyway under the guise of offering them ice cream and sexually assaulted both children. Following his arrest, he was committed to the California State Hospital, where medical authorities formally evaluated and declared him a sexual psychopath. In later interviews with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Morse admitted that he frequently engaged in voyeurism, prowling near residences to spy on unsuspecting women inside their homes.
The Washington State Murders and Assaults
Morse escalated to lethal violence in late 1959 in the Pacific Northwest. On November 7, 1959, Morse broke into the home of 28-year-old Glorie Brie in Spokane, Washington. Once inside the residence, he sexually assaulted and murdered her. Ten months later, on September 26, 1960, Morse committed his second known murder in Washington, breaking into the home of 69-year-old Blanche Boggs, whom he raped and murdered.
Shortly after the murder of Blanche Boggs, Morse carried out another home invasion in Washington. On October 25, 1960, he targeted 23-year-old Beverly Myers. Morse severely beat Myers inside her home during the assault, but she managed to survive her injuries. Three days later, on October 28, 1960, Morse traveled to Reseda, California. Armed with a knife, he broke into the home of his estranged ex-wife, Virginia Morse, and launched a physical attack against her before fleeing the state to escape law enforcement.
Multi-State Crime Spree: Georgia, Ohio, and Alabama
While fleeing felony charges in California for the attempted murder of his ex-wife, Morse traveled across several states, continuing a pattern of violent home-invasion assaults. In April 1961, Morse arrived in Atlanta, Georgia, where he forced entry into an apartment occupied by an unnamed mother and her three daughters. Armed with a knife, he threatened the family and molested one of the daughters before leaving. One week later, Morse returned to the same apartment complex, broke into a different unit, and raped an 18-year-old woman at knifepoint before fleeing Georgia.
Morse relocated to Dayton, Ohio, later that month in April 1961. He broke into a woman's apartment, held her at knifepoint, raped her, and repeatedly beat and stabbed her. Though left for dead, the victim survived the violent attack. Leaving Ohio, Morse traveled to Birmingham, Alabama. On July 11, 1961, Morse entered the home of 27-year-old Bobbi Ann Landini. He raped Landini, beat her to death with a pipe, and subjected her deceased body to post-mortem sexual assault.
FBI Most Wanted Listing, Final Murder, and Capture
As the multi-state investigation expanded, the FBI launched a nationwide search for Morse. On August 29, 1961, Hugh Bion Morse was added to the FBI's Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list as the 157th entry. Despite national publicity, Morse traveled northwest to St. Paul, Minnesota, establishing an alias. On September 18, 1961, he committed his final known murder when he broke into the home of 34-year-old Carol Ronan in St. Paul, raping and killing her.
Morse was captured on October 13, 1961, following a chance identification. A 21-year-old visitor named Mrs. Harold L. Carlson, touring FBI Headquarters in Washington, D.C., while on her honeymoon, recognized Morse's photograph on the "Ten Most Wanted" display. She recognized him as a former neighbor in St. Paul who had been living under a different name. She alerted authorities, leading to Morse's arrest in St. Paul shortly thereafter. Following his apprehension, Morse confessed to the homicides of Glorie Brie, Blanche Boggs, Bobbi Ann Landini, and Carol Ronan.
Legal Proceedings, Conviction, and Later Life
Morse was prosecuted in Minnesota for the murder of Carol Ronan. On December 15, 1961, he pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and received a sentence of life imprisonment at the Minnesota Correctional Facility in Stillwater. Years later, on January 21, 1979, Morse was extradited to Washington state to resolve detainer charges. He pleaded guilty to two counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of Glorie Brie and Blanche Boggs, as well as one count of first-degree assault against Beverly Myers. Under a legal agreement, he was sentenced to life probation in Washington, agreed never to return to the state, and was returned to Minnesota to complete his life sentence.
During his time in prison, investigators questioned Morse regarding other unsolved cold cases, including the March 1959 murder of 9-year-old Candy Rogers in Spokane, Washington, and the August 1961 disappearance of Ann Marie Burr in Tacoma. Morse denied involvement in the Rogers case, and DNA testing conducted in 2001 officially excluded Morse as a suspect (the case was later solved in 2021 linking John Reigh Hoff). Morse remained incarcerated in Minnesota until his death in April 2003 at the age of 73 at the Minnesota Correctional Facility in Bayport.
