Overview

On Memorial Day, May 29, 1972, 22-year-old Harvey Glenn McLeod opened fire outside the main entrance of North Hills Mall in Raleigh, North Carolina, killing four people and wounding eight before turning the gun on himself. The noon-hour attack lasted only a few minutes but left a lasting scar on the community.

Background of the Perpetrator

Harvey G. McLeod (born December 29, 1949) was a Raleigh resident who worked as a high-school janitor. On the morning of the attack, he purchased a .22-caliber rifle; within hours he used it to shoot shoppers clustered near the Six Forks Road entrance of the mall. As police sirens approached, McLeod shot himself and died at the scene.

The Attack: May 29, 1972

At about 12:05 p.m., McLeod knelt between two parked cars roughly fifty feet from the front entrance and began firing in short bursts toward benches and doorways. Witness accounts and contemporaneous reporting indicate he reloaded twice, firing approximately fourteen shots over four to six minutes before committing suicide. U.S. Senator B. Everett Jordan was campaigning at the mall; his press secretary, Wesley “Wes” Hayden, was among the wounded. ...Read More
