On May 29, 1972, Jacquelyn “Jackie” Wharton—a 47-year-old female—was shot and killed in the parking lot of the North Hills shopping center in Raleigh, North Carolina. Contemporary accounts and later retrospectives identify the incident as a sniper attack that unfolded around midday on Memorial Day, striking shoppers and campaign staff who were present for U.S. Senator B.
