April Lynn Holland, a 22-year-old woman from Raleigh, North Carolina, tragically lost her life on December 2, 2016. Holland, who was pregnant at the time, was found dead in a hotel room at the Americas Best Value Inn near Crabtree Valley Mall. Her boyfriend, Dwayne Garvey, 28, was also killed in the incident. The couple had been staying at the hotel for about a month and were involved in a prostitution enterprise.
Holland was working as a prostitute, while Garvey was her partner in the operation.
The investigation into their deaths revealed that the couple was shot multiple times. Security cameras at the motel captured the events leading up to the murders. The footage showed two suspects, Seaga Edward Gillard and Brandon Xavier Hill, walking up and down a corridor at the motel and approaching the room where Holland and Garvey were staying. Garvey was seen banging on the door to the room, followed by Hill confronting him with a gun and shooting him seven times. Gillard was then seen coming out of the room with his arm pointed back inside before running off. Holland was found dead inside the door to the room.
Both Gillard and Hill were charged with first-degree murder in connection to the deaths of Holland and Garvey. Gillard was convicted and sentenced to death by a Wake County jury in 2019. Hill faced multiple charges, including first-degree murder, first-degree kidnapping, assault by strangulation, first-degree forcible sex, and first-degree forcible rape. He was extradited to Wake County from Florida and held on no bond for the murder charge, with a $3 million bond on the other charges.
The case garnered significant attention due to the brutal nature of the crime and the involvement of the victims in a prostitution enterprise. Despite their circumstances, the prosecution emphasized that Holland and Garvey deserved justice for their tragic deaths.
