Dean A. Mellberg – Fairchild Air Force Base 1994 Shooting Rampage
Overview
On June 20, 1994, 20-year-old former Airman Dean A. Mellberg carried out a deadly shooting rampage at the Fairchild Air Force Base hospital annex and main hospital in Spokane County, Washington. Armed with a Chinese-made MAK-90 (a variant of the AK-47) fitted with a 75-round drum magazine, Mellberg killed several individuals—including his own mental health evaluators—and wounded many others before being shot and killed by a responding Air Force Security Police officer .
Sequence and Details of the Rampage
Mellberg arrived at the hospital around 2:45 p.m., exiting a taxicab from a Spokane motel. Dressed in all black with a large duffel bag, he entered the annex and immediately targeted the two mental health officers who had recommended his discharge . Then he moved through the building, shooting indiscriminately, entered the main hospital and cafeteria, and finally continued the attack outside in the parking lot .

- Anita L. Lindner (sometimes “Linder”), age 39 or early 40s—shot and killed in the hospital parking lot as she tried to flee .
