Dustin Dale Johnson and the 2026 Amarillo Mass Murder

Overview

Dustin Dale Johnson was a 41-year-old man identified by Amarillo police as the gunman responsible for a deadly sequence of violence in Amarillo, Texas, on March 22, 2026. According to investigators, Johnson attacked people at two separate locations, killing three victims immediately or within days of the shootings and wounding several others. His actions ended after he allegedly opened fire on responding police officers and was fatally shot by law enforcement. The attacks occurred during an exceptionally violent Sunday in Amarillo, when four unrelated shootings left multiple people dead or wounded across the city. Although the other incidents involved different suspects, police attributed the killings at a storage facility and a residence on Northwest 14th Street to Johnson. Authorities said he wore body armor, carried a rifle and continued firing even after officers arrived.

The Storage Facility Killings

The first attack attributed to Johnson occurred at a storage facility near Loop 335 and North Western Street in Amarillo. Police said Johnson confronted Courtney Holman and Aaron Harper during what was initially described in news reports as an attempted robbery. Both victims were shot and killed at the property. Courtney May Holman, 33, was remembered by friends and coworkers as a kind, dependable woman whose humor and generosity affected many people around her. She worked at the Ranch House Bar, which released a tribute describing her as someone who gave her time, energy and heart freely. Aaron Harper, 31, was also killed during the attack. The deaths of Holman and Harper prompted an immediate law-enforcement response and began a rapidly unfolding search for Johnson. After leaving the storage facility, Johnson reportedly fled in a pickup truck. Potter County deputies and Texas Department of Public Safety personnel pursued him for a short time, but he managed to evade the officers. The escape gave Johnson enough time to reach another part of Amarillo, where the violence continued approximately half an hour later.

The Northwest 14th Street Attack

At approximately 8:15 a.m., Johnson arrived at a residence in the 1900 block of Northwest 14th Street, near Bonham Street. Police said he deliberately drove his pickup truck into the house, causing a violent collision that damaged the structure and placed the occupants in immediate danger. He then got out of the vehicle carrying a rifle and began shooting toward the home and the people in and around it. Teodoro Garcia-Herrera, 53, was fatally shot during the attack. Five other people were wounded. Among the injured was Danny Shead, 54, who was transported for emergency medical treatment. Shead initially survived but remained in critical condition and died on March 26, 2026, four days after the shooting. His death increased the number of people killed by Johnson to four when Johnson himself was included among the dead, and to three victims murdered by Johnson. Garcia-Herrera was a native of Matehuala in San Luis Potosí, Mexico, and was known in Amarillo as an experienced construction worker. Friends described him as patient, loyal and hardworking. He was remembered as a protective friend and a father figure to people who worked beside him at RR Stucco & Plaster Construction.
