In the spring of 2026, the life of Teodoro Garcia-Herrera, a 53-year-old Hispanic male, was tragically cut short in a wave of violence that swept through Amarillo, Texas. Originally from Matehuala, San Luis Potosí, Mexico, Garcia-Herrera was known as a man of integrity and a master of his craft in stucco and plaster. He was remembered as a father figure by his colleagues, a patient man who met frustration with a smile, and a loyal friend who built not just walls, but also strong relationships
with those around him. His life was a testament to hard work and the simple joys of good company, a legacy that would be dearly remembered by his work family and loved ones.
The morning of Sunday, March 22, 2026, unfolded into a day of terror across Amarillo, orchestrated by 41-year-old Dustin Johnson. Johnson, who had a significant criminal history including convictions for aggravated robbery and tampering with evidence, began his rampage around 7:36 a.m. at a storage facility off Loop 335. There, he murdered two people during an attempted robbery. After fleeing the initial crime scene, Johnson led Potter County deputies and Texas Department of Public Safety troopers on a brief chase before managing to evade them. His path of destruction, however, was far from over as he made his way to a home in the 1900 block of Northwest 14th Avenue.
It was at this quiet residential street that the final, tragic chapter of the day's violence unfolded. Around 8:15 a.m., Johnson crashed his vehicle into the house and immediately began shooting at the residence. Inside or nearby was Teodoro Garcia-Herrera, who became the final homicide victim of Johnson's spree. When Amarillo police officers arrived, they found Johnson outside the home, armed with a rifle and protected by body armor. Officers gave verbal commands for him to drop his weapon, but Johnson refused to comply. The confrontation escalated into a shootout, and Johnson was shot multiple times by the police. In addition to killing Garcia-Herrera, Johnson injured five other people at the 14th Avenue location. Because the sole suspect, Dustin Johnson, was killed by police at the scene of the crime, there were no arrests or subsequent legal proceedings in the murder of Teodoro Garcia-Herrera. The case concluded with the death of the perpetrator, leaving a community to mourn the loss of Garcia-Herrera and the other innocent victims of that violent Sunday.
