On September 7, 2024, in Amarillo, Texas, 11-year-old Daniel Garcia, his mother, and his sister were tragically killed in a murder-suicide perpetrated by his mother's husband, 42-year-old Jose David Olmos. The incident occurred at their residence in the 3600 block of NE 14th Avenue, where a concerned family member discovered the bodies and alerted authorities.
Upon arrival, police found that Daniel, his mother Jessica, and his sister Jazale had suffered multiple gunshot wounds, all pronounced dead at the scene. Jose Olmos was also found deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Prior to this tragic event, in May 2024, Jose Olmos had been arrested for assaulting Jessica, leading to charges of assault causing bodily injury to a family member. He was released on a $5,000 bond with conditions that included no contact with Jessica or her children and mandatory enrollment in an alcohol education course. Despite these measures, Jessica had recently reconciled with Jose, returning to the family home in an effort to mend their relationship.
Investigations revealed that the firearm used in the incident belonged to Jessica, and Jose, due to his prior convictions—including possession of marijuana in 2001 and a DWI in 2008—was prohibited from possessing a firearm.
