On July 9, 2023, 28-year-old DeQuincton Te'Quan Taylor tragically lost his life during a private party in Amarillo, Texas. The event, held at an event center near SW 45th Avenue and Georgia Street, was intended to celebrate his fiancée's birthday. During the gathering, a fight erupted among some attendees, leading to gunfire that resulted in seven people being shot.
Taylor and 32-year-old Semagea Deveon Smith both succumbed to their injuries, while five others sustained injuries but were expected to recover.
In the aftermath of the shooting, the Amarillo Police Department launched an investigation to identify and apprehend the individual responsible. On July 15, 2023, authorities arrested 26-year-old Jose Luis Arevalo Flores III in connection with the incident. Flores was charged with two counts of murder and four counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He was subsequently booked into the Randall County Detention Center, with bond set at $1 million.
In March 2024, Flores was released from custody after posting the $1 million bond. His attorney contended that Flores was a victim in the incident, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds to the back, and suggested that the charges were a result of mistaken identity. The case remained under investigation, with legal proceedings ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the tragic events of that night.
Taylor's death had a profound impact on his family and the Amarillo community. Known as "Dee," he was remembered as a humble, outgoing individual who was deeply loved by those around him. A father of four children, Taylor had recently obtained his Commercial Driver's License and was looking forward to new opportunities. His family and friends gathered to honor his memory, emphasizing the need to address gun violence in the community to prevent further tragedies.
