On September 18, 2024, at approximately 4:37 p.m., Amarillo police responded to a shooting at The Larsson apartment complex, located in the 2200 block of SW 7th Avenue. Upon arrival, officers discovered 40-year-old Anthony Dewayne Dunn deceased from multiple gunshot wounds. The suspect had fled the scene on foot.
Investigations revealed that Dunn had a complex relationship with 25-year-old Keon Trashone Mathis.
According to court documents, Vember Jeffries, who shares an 11-month-old child with Dunn and was seven months pregnant with Mathis' child at the time, informed police that Dunn had been stalking her, leading to prior conflicts between Dunn and Mathis. On the day of the incident, a confrontation ensued between Dunn and Jeffries in the apartment complex lobby, escalating into a physical altercation in the parking lot. Jeffries reported that during this altercation, Mathis began shooting at Dunn, who attempted to flee but was pursued by Mathis. Witnesses stated that Mathis continued firing, causing Dunn to fall, and then stood over him, discharging additional rounds.
Following the issuance of a murder warrant, Mathis was apprehended during a traffic stop in Childress by the Childress Police Department and subsequently booked into the Childress County Detention Center. He was later extradited to Potter County, where he was indicted on one count of murder by a grand jury.
Anthony Dunn was born on June 3, 1984, in Pampa, Texas. He was known for his love of family, enjoyment of dominoes, fishing, and being the life of the party. He is survived by his siblings, nieces, nephews, and a host of extended family and friends.
