On January 17, 2024, at approximately 8 p.m., Amarillo police responded to a shooting at Sam Houston Park, located at 4101 Line Ave in Amarillo, Texas. Upon arrival, officers found 20-year-old John Edward Red suffering from a gunshot wound. He was transported to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries, marking the city's first homicide of the year.
