On January 17, 2024, at approximately 8 p.m., Amarillo police responded to a shooting at Sam Houston Park, located at 4101 Line Ave in Amarillo, Texas. Upon arrival, officers found 20-year-old John Edward Red suffering from a gunshot wound. He was transported to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries, marking the city's first homicide of the year.
The Amarillo Police Department's Homicide Unit swiftly initiated an investigation, identifying 18-year-old Jhequaylen Elija Badillo as the primary suspect. A murder warrant was issued for Badillo, who had a prior criminal record, including a guilty plea in March 2023 for aggravated assault, resulting in a four-year probation sentence. Additionally, in June 2023, he pleaded guilty to unlawful carrying of a weapon and served 15 days in jail.
On the morning of January 18, 2024, officers conducted surveillance at a residence in the 1500 block of Hillcrest, where Badillo was believed to be located. Upon noticing police presence, Badillo fled on foot, leading officers on a pursuit that concluded in the 4200 block of Wolflin Avenue. During the chase, Badillo ran between two houses, where officers heard a gunshot. They discovered that Badillo had died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, effectively ending the pursuit.
The Amarillo Police Department's Homicide Unit continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding both the initial homicide and the subsequent events leading to the suspect's death. The community remains in shock over the tragic loss of two young lives within such a short timeframe.
