On March 26, 2023, at approximately 4:45 a.m., Amarillo police responded to reports of a shooting at the intersection of Amarillo Boulevard West and North McMasters Street. Upon arrival, officers discovered three individuals with gunshot wounds: 21-year-old Javaurian Penns and two female teenagers, aged 17 and 18. All three victims were transported to a local hospital, where Penns was pronounced dead. The two female victims sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were expected to recover.
The Amarillo Police Department's Homicide Unit launched an investigation into the incident, seeking information from the public to identify any suspects involved. Despite these efforts, no arrests have been made, and the case remains unsolved. In September 2023, authorities increased the reward for information leading to an arrest, hoping to encourage potential witnesses to come forward.
Penns, known by nicknames such as "Jay" and "J-Var," was remembered for his athleticism and vibrant personality. He attended local schools, including Palo Duro High School, and was a father to two young daughters, Kamilla and Londyn Dream Penns. His family and the community continue to seek justice for his untimely death.
As of December 2024, the Amarillo Police Department continues to investigate the homicide, urging anyone with information to contact their Homicide Unit or Amarillo Crime Stoppers. The community remains hopeful that new leads will emerge to bring closure to Penns' family and hold those responsible accountable.
