Nidal Hasan and the 2009 Fort Hood Mass Shooting
Overview
On November 5, 2009, U.S. Army Major Nidal Malik Hasan carried out a mass shooting at Fort Hood, a military base near Killeen, Texas. The attack became the deadliest mass shooting on a U.S. military installation, leaving 13 people dead and more than 30 injured. Hasan, an Army psychiatrist, opened fire inside the Soldier Readiness Processing Center, where soldiers were preparing for deployment to Iraq and Afghanistan.
The Attack
Shortly after 1:30 p.m., Hasan entered the processing center armed with an FN Five-seven semi-automatic pistol and a revolver. He shouted “Allahu Akbar!” (“God is great” in Arabic) and began shooting at soldiers and civilians indiscriminately. Many of the victims were unarmed service members waiting for medical exams and administrative processing. The rampage lasted about 10 minutes before Hasan was shot by civilian police officers Sgt. Kimberly Munley and Sgt. Mark Todd, who confronted him outside the building. Hasan was paralyzed from the waist down as a result of the gunfire.
