Serial Killer Samuel William Legg III: A Detailed Account of His Crimes

Overview

Samuel William Legg III, born in August 1969, is an American serial killer and rapist responsible for the murders of at least five women across Ohio and Illinois during the 1990s. His criminal activities remained undetected for decades until advancements in DNA profiling linked him to multiple cold cases, leading to his arrest in 2019.

Early Life and Background

Legg began his career as a truck driver in the late 1980s, a profession that facilitated his crimes by allowing him to travel extensively across state lines. His transient lifestyle made it challenging for law enforcement to connect the dots between the various murders and assaults he committed.

Crimes and Victims

Legg's known victims include:
  • Angela Hicks (14): Disappeared on July 21, 1990, in Elyria, Ohio. Her body was discovered on August 30, 1990, near Midway Mall in Lorain County. Legg, her stepfather, was a prime suspect but was not charged at the time.
  • Sharon Lynn Kedzierski (43): Reported missing in March 1992. Her body was found on April 9, 1992, at the Universal Truck Mall & Flea Market in Austintown, Mahoning County, Ohio. She remained unidentified for over two decades before DNA evidence linked Legg to her murder.
  • Victoria Collins (27): Found deceased on December 20, 1996, behind the Union 76 truck stop on Route 420, near exit 71 of the Ohio Turnpike in Wood County, Ohio. DNA evidence later connected Legg to her murder.
  • Julie A. Konkol (39): Discovered on October 23, 1997, behind an abandoned truck stop at Old Route 41 and Russell Road in Russell, Illinois. She had been strangled to death. DNA evidence linked Legg to her murder years later.
  • Unidentified 17-year-old female: In September 1997, a 17-year-old hitchhiker was raped near a truck stop on I-71 in Medina County, Ohio. DNA evidence eventually connected Legg to this assault.
