Milos Klvana, born on June 4, 1940, in Milotice, Czechoslovakia, pursued a medical degree, graduating in 1967. He married Svata in July 1964, and the couple defected from their homeland following the Soviet invasion in 1968. After brief stays in Italy, Switzerland, and Canada, they settled in the United States, where Klvana began practicing medicine in California in 1975.

Between 1982 and 1986, Dr. Klvana operated birthing clinics in Valencia and Temple City, California. He undertook high-risk deliveries without the necessary skills or equipment, leading to the deaths of multiple infants and a fetus. His practices included:
