Convicted Serial Killer: The Crimes of Garry Dean Artman
Early Life and Criminal Background
Garry Dean Artman, a long-haul truck driver from Florida, had a history of violent sexual offenses prior to his conviction for multiple murders. In 1980, he was convicted of raping and threatening to kill a 16-year-old girl, resulting in an 11-year prison sentence. He was released in 1992, four years before committing further heinous crimes.
The Murder of Sharron Hammack
On October 3, 1996, the body of 29-year-old Sharron Hammack was discovered in Caledonia Township, Michigan. Hammack, a mother of two who was four weeks pregnant at the time, had been sexually assaulted, strangled, and stabbed twice in the head. Her body was found wrapped in a blanket, hogtied with electrical cords, and left in a field off 76th Street SE. Despite initial investigations, the case remained unsolved for decades.
Advancements in DNA Technology and Arrest
In 2019, the Kent County Sheriff's Office utilized forensic genetic genealogy to revisit the cold case. DNA samples collected from the crime scene were analyzed, leading investigators to identify Garry Artman as a suspect. In August 2022, Artman was arrested in Mississippi. Further DNA analysis connected him to the 2006 murder of 24-year-old Dusty Shuck in Maryland, whose body was found near a truck stop along an interstate outside New Market.
