The Doodler is an unidentified serial killer believed to have operated in San Francisco, California, between January 1974 and September 1975. The nickname "Doodler" was derived from the suspect's habit of sketching his victims before attacking them. The Doodler is suspected of killing at least six men and assaulting three others, targeting gay men in bars, nightclubs, and restaurants.
Victims
- Gerald Earl Cavanagh: Found on January 27, 1974, at Ocean Beach. The 49-year-old Canadian-American immigrant was stabbed multiple times and had defensive wounds.
- Joseph "Jae" Stevens: Discovered on June 25, 1974, near Spreckels Lake. The 27-year-old comedian and female impersonator was last seen at a club the previous day.
- Klaus Achim "Claus" Christmann: Found on July 7, 1974, at Ocean Beach. The 31-year-old German-American immigrant suffered multiple stab wounds and throat slashes.
- Warren Andrews: Attacked on April 27, 1975, at Land's End. The 52-year-old lawyer succumbed to his injuries seven weeks later.
- Frederick Capin: Discovered on May 12, 1975, behind a sand dune. The 32-year-old Vietnam veteran and nurse was brutally stabbed.
- Harald Gullberg: Found on June 4, 1975, at Lincoln Park. The 66-year-old Swedish immigrant was the oldest known victim.
Investigation
The Doodler was described as a slender Black man, aged 19 to 25, standing approximately six feet tall. Despite interviewing a strong suspect in 1976, authorities have not made an arrest. The case remains unsolved, with renewed efforts and a $250,000 reward for information.
