Background

Jonathan Mills, born on July 22, 1973, in New Haven, Connecticut, had a troubled past marked by frequent encounters with law enforcement. Between 1990 and 1999, he was arrested twenty-three times, primarily for property and narcotics offenses. His escalating criminal behavior culminated in a series of heinous murders in late 2000.

The Murders

In late 2000, Mills committed four brutal murders in Guilford, Connecticut:

• Mindy Leigh: In October 2000, Mills strangled 19-year-old Mindy Leigh following an argument. Her disappearance remained a mystery until his later confession.
• Katherine "Kitty" Kleinkauf: On December 27, 2000, Mills entered the home of his former aunt by marriage, 43-year-old Katherine Kleinkauf, intending to steal her ATM card to fund his drug addiction. When Kleinkauf awoke and confronted him, Mills stabbed her to death.
• Rachael Crum: Six-year-old Rachael, Kleinkauf's daughter, was awakened by the commotion. In a bid to silence her, Mills fatally stabbed the young girl.
• Kyle Redway: Four-year-old Kyle, another of Kleinkauf's children, also awoke during the incident. Mills brutally stabbed him to death to eliminate any witnesses.

Arrest and Confession

Following the discovery of the bodies on December 27, 2000, Mills became a prime suspect due to his criminal history and familial connection to the victims.
