Mindy Leigh, a 20-year-old female who was residing in Guilford, Connecticut, after moving from Texas to live with her sister, disappeared on October 10, 2000. Her sudden absence was a cause for great concern for her family. For weeks, her whereabouts remained a mystery, casting a shadow of unease over the community. The search for Mindy would come to a grim conclusion in the final days of the year.
The investigation into her disappearance took a dramatic turn in late December of the same
year. A local man, 27-year-old Jonathan Mills, was arrested in connection with the separate and brutal murders of his aunt, Katherine Kleinkauf, and her two young children, Rachael Crum, 6, and Kyle Redway, 4. During his interrogation for those crimes, Mills provided investigators with startling information that led them to the Guilford Fairgrounds. There, on December 28, 2000, police discovered human remains that were later positively identified as Mindy Leigh.
Jonathan Mills confessed to killing Mindy Leigh. According to his account, he and Leigh had consensual sex in a wooded area near the fairgrounds on the night she disappeared. An argument ensued, during which he strangled her to death. Before his confession, police had considered Mills a suspect in Leigh's disappearance and had even searched his home in November of that year, but at the time, there was insufficient evidence to charge him.
Ultimately, Jonathan Mills was charged with the murder of Mindy Leigh in addition to the capital felony and murder charges for the deaths of his aunt and cousins. The motive for the triple homicide was reportedly to steal his aunt's ATM card to get money for drugs. In January 2005, Jonathan Mills was sentenced to life in prison for the four murders, bringing a legal conclusion to the tragic and interconnected crimes that had shaken the town of Guilford.
