Overview

In the early 1970s, a nomadic family from Texas, led by patriarch Sherman McCrary and his wife Carolyn, embarked on a cross-country crime spree that left a trail of violence and death. Alongside their son Danny, daughter Ginger, and son-in-law Carl Taylor, the McCrary-Taylor family was implicated in numerous robberies, kidnappings, and murders across several states. Their modus operandi often involved targeting late-night establishments, abducting female employees, and subsequently murdering them.

Notable Crimes

• Victim: Sheri Lee Martin, 17 Date: August 17, 1971 Location: Salt Lake City, Utah Details: Martin was abducted from a Winchell's Donut Shop where she worked. She was raped and murdered, with her body later discovered near Wendover, Nevada.
• Victim: Leeora Rose Looney, 20 Date: August 20, 1971 Location: Lakewood, Colorado Details: Looney was kidnapped from a donut shop, raped, and murdered. Her body was found near the Wyoming border.
• Victim: Elizabeth Steffens Date: September 1971 Location: Texas Details: Steffens disappeared and her remains were found three months later. McCrary and Taylor confessed to her murder.

Arrest and Convictions

The family's crime spree came to an end in June 1972 after a failed supermarket robbery in Santa Barbara, California. During the attempted robbery, a police officer was wounded, leading to a manhunt that culminated in the arrest of all five family members. Subsequent investigations connected them to at least ten murders across multiple states. Sherman McCrary and Carl Taylor were convicted of the murder of Leeora Looney and received life sentences. Carolyn McCrary and Ginger Taylor were convicted on lesser charges related to their involvement and served shorter prison terms.
