Elizabeth Josephine “Betty Jo” Steffens Perryman, a 26-year-old white female, was born on August 2, 1945, in Lubbock, Texas. She was raised in Levelland, a small town near Lubbock, where she was known for her vibrant personality and striking resemblance to actress Elizabeth Taylor. Elizabeth married Van Perryman, a taxi driver, and together they had two children, including a daughter named Regina, born in July 1971.
At the time of her disappearance in September 1971, Elizabeth was working as a waitress at a Toddle House coffee shop in Amarillo, Texas, with aspirations of attending Texas Tech University.
On the night of her disappearance, Elizabeth contacted the taxi dispatch to request a ride home from her husband. When Van arrived at the restaurant, it was locked, and Elizabeth was nowhere to be found. The following morning, staff discovered that $86.25 was missing from the cash register, Elizabeth's purse remained in the restaurant, and the premises appeared hastily cleaned. Despite immediate efforts to locate her, Elizabeth remained missing for three months until her remains were discovered eight miles west of Amarillo. Her identity was confirmed through dental records provided by her family.
Subsequent investigations linked Elizabeth's murder to a series of crimes committed by the McCrary-Taylor family, a nomadic group from Texas responsible for a string of robberies, kidnappings, and murders across several states. The family targeted late-night establishments, abducting female employees who were then assaulted and killed. In June 1972, after a failed robbery attempt in Santa Barbara, California, the McCrary-Taylor family was apprehended. During interrogations, members Sherman McCrary and Carl Taylor confessed to multiple murders, including that of Elizabeth Steffens.
Despite these confessions, Elizabeth's case was never officially closed with a conviction. Sherman McCrary and Carl Taylor received life sentences for other murders, while Carolyn McCrary and Ginger Taylor served shorter prison terms. Danny McCrary was also convicted and died in prison in 2007. Elizabeth's family, particularly her daughter Regina, continued to seek closure and understanding of the events surrounding her mother's death. Through connecting with others affected by the McCrary-Taylor crimes and accessing police records, Regina gained a more comprehensive, albeit painful, understanding of her mother's final days.
