Shane Devon Tamura – Mass Murderer

Overview

Shane Devon Tamura, a 27-year-old man from Las Vegas, carried out a mass shooting at an office building at 345 Park Avenue in Midtown Manhattan on July 28, 2025. Armed with an assault-style rifle and wearing body armor, he opened fire in the lobby and then proceeded to the 33rd floor before committing suicide. Four people were killed.

Background of the Shooter

• Name: Shane Devon Tamura (January 19, 1998 – July 28, 2025)
• Born in Hawaii, raised in Santa Clarita, California. Played high school football as a running back at Granada Hills Charter High School.
• Worked in the surveillance department at Horseshoe Las Vegas casino; held a concealed carry permit (issued 2022, valid through 2027) and previously held a private investigator's license.
• Had a documented history of mental health struggles including depression, chronic migraines, insomnia, bipolar disorder, anxiety, sports-related concussions; hospitalized for mental health crises in 2022 and 2024; mother made 911 calls reporting his suicidal ideations and access to firearms.
• Despite mental health history, background checks did not flag him, allowing the legal acquisition of weapons. He purchased the AR-15 style rifle from a supervisor at the casino for $1,400, and also had a revolver legally purchased using his permit.

Shooting Incident – July 28, 2025

The incident unfolded as follows:

• Shane Tamura drove from Las Vegas to New York over several days, passing through Colorado (July 26), Nebraska and Iowa (July 27), and New Jersey (July 28), before arriving in Manhattan and double-parking his black BMW outside 345 Park Avenue around 6:28 p.m. EDT.
• He entered the building carrying an M4 or AR-style assault rifle, opening fire immediately—first in the lobby.
• Three people were shot in the lobby: off-duty NYPD officer Didarul Islam (36), a security guard Aland Etienne (46), and another civilian. One man (an NFL staff member) was critically injured (later hospitalized). He then took an elevator—allowing a woman to exit unharmed—to the 33rd floor (Rudin Management offices) and fatally shot Julia Hyman (27), a Rudin employee, before turning the gun on himself.
